Abstract
The objectives of the study were to find out the discourse markers that
used by students naturally in the paragraph writing, and to describe the
reasons of why they used the discourse markers in the way they do. The
study was conducted by applying a descriptive qualitative research. The
subjects of the research were the students of three different grade of senior
high school at SMA Methodist 1. It aims for knowing the use of discourse
markers by cognitive development. The data was the students’ writing
which divided by three different genres (descriptive, procedure and
narrative) that was analyzed following Fraser Taxonomy (1999). It was
found that 7 types of discourse markers used occurred in the students
paragraph where grade 10 and 11 used 6 types and grade 12 used 7 types.
The mastery of grade 10th, 11th and 12th in using Discourse Markers are not
quite different. Also, it proves that the age is not meaningful to their
mastery of Discourse Markers.
