Abstract

This study deals with the development of ESP Reading Material for second semester of Civil Law Department of Law Faculty University HKBP Nommensen Medan. The objectives of this study are to: 1) evaluate the existing English reading materials for Civil Law Department of Law Faculty in University HKBP Nommensen, 2) find out English reading material that meets with the students of Civil Law Department of Law Faculty in University HKBP Nommensen, 3) develop English reading materials through PBL. Developing English reading material that relevant to the needs of students of Civil Law Department of Law Faculty of University HKBP Nommensen, especially second semester. This study was conducted by a research and development (R&D) method proposed by Borg and Gall (2003). The target clients of this research were the number of totally reach 50 respondents namely: the second semester students of Civil Law Department of University HKBP Nommensen of 2016-2017 academic year, English lecturer, alumnae and stakeholder. The instruments of collecting the data were documentary sheet, questionnaire, and interview. The result of the research show that the existing reading materials were less comprehensively, less relevant to the field of law faculty, the terminologies and the vocabularies that used in the materials were still used the general English. Then, students needed materials appropriate with their field, using terminologies and vocabularies appropriate with their field. Therefore, the new English reading material and the new syllabus were developed based on the students’ need related to their field and workplace. After that the reading materials validated and suggested by two experts. They agreed that the new reading material and syllabus were relevant for the Law Faculty Students. It is suggested to the English lecturer to provide the materials based on the students’ need.
