Abstract
This study deals with the language shift of Mandailingnese in Desa Bandar Khalipah Kecamatan Percut Sei Tuan. It employs qualitative research design. This study aims to describe the language shift of Mandailingnese in Desa Bandar Khalipah. The respondents were 30 people Mandailingnese speakers in Desa Bandar Khalipah Kec. Percut Sei Tuan, which consisted of two groups, namely adults and teenagers groups (as second generation). The instruments used for this study were observation, questionnaire and interview. Questionnaire was applied to collect the data about the factors that influence language shift of Mandailingnese in Desa Bandar Khalipah Kecamatan Percut Sei Tuan, and interview was applied to get in-depth result of the research. The data were analyzed using Gay, L. R and Airasian data analysis. Language shift of Mandailingnese by second generation. They keep using their language (Bahasa Mandailing) in Desa Bandar Khalipah Kecamatan Percut Sei Tuan because they realize the condition of shift of Mandailingnese language nowadays, whereas the first generation does not. They shift from Bahasa Mandailing to speak Indonesian language. There are seven factors influence that language shift of Mandailingnese, they are intra-marriage, use of the language at home, living in area dominated by Indonesian language speakers and ethnic linguistics vitality, use of the language in religion domain, use of the language in education domain, use of the language in neighborhood domain, use of the language in workplace domain, visiting homeland and following (traditional) ceremony. At present language shift is only mandailingnese by the second generation, parental generation (second generation) and upwards generation (first generation). Meanwhile the third generation now shifts to the dominant language used that is Indonesian language.
