Abstract

Reading is one of four necessary important language skills among those skills in
learning English as a second or foreign language. The students will understand
about the material better if they have the knowledge first. In this research the
researcher used teaching reading strategies by Vacca (1999) to analyze the
teacher’s strategies in teaching reading comprehension at seventh grade of SMP
Negeri 2 Medan. This study is about an Analysis Of Teacher’s Strategies In
Teaching Reading Comprehension At Seventh Grade Of SMP Negeri 2 Medan.
The purpose of this study was to identify what types of strategies are used by
teacher in teaching reading comprehension. It was conducted by using descriptive
qualitative research design. The subject of this research was one English teacher
of SMP Negeri 2 Medan. The data was collected by doing an observation during
the learning process and interview. The finding showed that the teacher used theee
teaching strategies, they are : Scaffolding, QARs (Question and answer
relationship) and think aloud. First, the teacher uses scaffolding strategy to help
the students who have difficulties in understanding the material. Second, the
teacher used QARs strategy to build students knowledge, to know the students
understanding toward the material, and make the students become more active.
The last, the teacher used think – aloud strategy to help the students understand
the text easily. Based on finding the researcher suggested the teacher to use
another alternative strategy which is more intersting to improve students ability
