Abstract

This research goal was to develop English writing material on Descriptive text for
grade ten students. This research was conducted by using Research and
Development (R&D) design through six steps: gathering the data, need analysis,
design media, validating by experts, revising, and the final project. The subjects of
the study were Grade X Students of SMK Negeri 1 Medan. The instruments of
data collection were obtained by interviewing and distributing questionnaires to
30 respondents to get students’ needs. The findings of the interview and
questionnaire revealed that students want English learning material that inspires
them to comprehend descriptive material while writing. The product was validated
by two experts; an English lecturer and an English teacher. The product result was
an English writing material that contains topic about historical building and tourist
attraction. The result of experts’ validation showed that the material was an
appropriate material to be used in teaching writing descriptive text by getting an
average percentage of 95% categorized as excellent
