Abstract
Novel such ad Cerita Calon Arang are quite populer in Indonesia. These novel are quite
interesting to study because they are not only involving knowledge, but also requiring the
settings in which kindness and truth. This paper is a semiotic study that aims at investigating
code and cultural meaning. The data are analyzed based on descriptive qualitative research. The
findings show that there are twenty one of word which meanings coded in the Cerita Calon
Arang. There were fourteen sentences have meanings coded in Cerita Calon Arang. The
categories was found of cultural meaning, authority, magic, religion, and human which
semiotically coded in the Cerita Calon Arang. The reason why it becomes the dominant
categories because the content of Cerita Calon Arang happened in 1019-1042 M.
