Translanguaging Used by Teacher & Students in Descriptive Text at MAN 3 Medan

The aim of this study was to find out the types and the implementation of translanguaging
used by teacher and students in descriptive text at MAN 3 Medan. This research was
conducted by using qualitative research design. The subjects of this research were 29
students grade X and an English teacher at MAN 3 Medan. The data were collected through
observation, interviews, and questionnaire. An observation was conducted to get the
information about the types of translanguaging used by teacher and students during teaching
and learning process. Then, interviews were conducted to get the information the
implementation of translanguaging during learning process. Lastly, questionnaire was
distributed to the students to get an information regarding their understanding related to the
learning material about descriptive text. The result of this study showed that the types of
translanguaging were found in 3 types such as intra sentential translanguaging 37,9%, inter
– sentential translanguaging 44,8%, and tag translanguaging 17,2%. Then, translanguaging
it has positive impact in teaching and learning process. The teacher more often used
translanguaging and it makes easier for students to understand the learning material and
easily for them to develop their skills. Translanguaging will surely be beneficial in teaching
English classroom because most of Indonesian people still do not have adequate vocabulary
and space where they can practice their English.
