Abstract
The purpose of this research is to make communication easier to understand between the speaker and the receiver of the message, namely the listener and the reader. So that the speech acts delivered by the speaker can be understood and implemented by the receiver of the message, and so that the speaker’s goal in conveying his speech act is achieved. Social media users can express their thoughts and feelings as well as share the most recent information with their friends and followers by using the status update feature. Status updates allow users to share information about their activities, their thoughts, or things that interest them. The notion of speech actions, which is based on Searle's theory of speech acts, is used in this study. This research explores the speech acts that occurred in the status updates of the four accounts of music judges (Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie) on their respective twitter. This study is a qualitative descriptive study. The primary data in this study are words, phrases, sentences, expressions, moods, and conversations contained in status update on Twitter’s accounts of the four music judges. The result of this study found several things; the use of representative acts by the four public figures was 26.27%, directive use 41.24%, and expressive use 30.80%. Howie did not use commissives or declaratives. The other three public figures used commissives 0.99% and declaratives 0.70%.The similarity of the four music judges is that they are very active in using speech acts to express their feelings and experiences in the form of expressive speech acts, and always used directive speech acts so that the recipient of message does what is conveyed and they always convey information, news and tell what happened by using representative speech acts. Reporting is the most frequently utilized representative-speaking act among the four music judges. It is inviting for the four music judges to employ the direction speech acts most frequently. The four music judges most frequently employed complementing as one of the expressive speech acts. It appears promising that the three music judges employ the commissive speaking acts most frequently. Graduation is the declarative speech act that the three music judges employ the most frequently.
