Abstract
Humor serves as a means of conveying ideas and concepts in communication. It also serves the purpose of entertaining individuals, as shown in the context of Stand-up Comedy. This study examines explicitly the verbal humor present in Bill Burr's performances. The aims of this research are (1) to identify the types of verbal humor utilized by American Stand-Up comedians, (2) to elaborate on how verbal humor is linguistically created through the lens of the General Theory of Verbal Humor (GTVH), and (3) to discover the reasons verbal humor is created linguistically. This study employed content analysis as the research design. The
data were utterances containing verbal humor in the transcribed video Live at Troubadour 3. The data were analyzed using the theory of Shade (1996) and the
General Theory of Verbal Humor (1991). The theory of Shade (1996) was used to analyze the types of verbal humor, and the General Theory of Verbal Humor (1991) was used to analyze the types of verbal humor found in transcription. The result of the research showed that there were 39 numbers of verbal humor found in Live at Troubadour 3. It was found that 9 out of 12 types of verbal humor were found in Live at Troubadour 3. It means Bill Burr was good at creating humorous situations in the show.
