Abstract
This study aims to determine the variants of andung in the ritual of death of saur
matua in Mariah Hombang village and to find out the meaning of the strains of
each andung in the ritual of death of saur matua in the village of Mariah Hombang
and to find out the expression of andung in the ritual of death of saur matua in the
village of Mariah Hombang. The type of research used is qualitative research with
a descriptive approach. The population in this study consisted of traditional
leaders and the village community of Mariah Hombang. The samples in this study
were 1 traditional leader and 3 people from grieving families. Data collection
techniques used by using the technique of observation, interviews and
documentation. The results of this study indicate that there are several variants of
andung that can be seen from the expression of Pangandung, namely wife, son-in
law and sister. From each andung there is an implied meaning in each of its lyrics,
and andung has a different emotional expression from each sangdung who sings it
depending on its closeness to the deceased.
