Abstract
The study deals with the strategies for teaching listening comprehension,
especially in descriptive text. The objectives of the study were to find out the
strategies used by teachers and their reasons for using them. The research method
of this study was qualitative research. The source of data was taken from two
English teachers’ transcriptions of the recorded video when teaching in the
classroom, an interview, and a questionnaire. The researcher found that Teacher 1
used a metacognitive strategy (12.5%) and a cognitive strategy (17%). In
Metacognitive strategy Teacher 1 used Self-Monitoring strategy and in Cognitive
Strategy Teacher 1 used Imagery and Note-Taking Strategy. Meanwhile, Teacher
2 used one strategy namely the social/affective strategy, the strategy used by
Teacher 2 in Social/Affective strategy is Cooperation Strategy. From the results,
the researcher found that Teacher I used metacognitive strategy and cognitive
strategy due to the teacher’s intention to lead the students to understand listening
materials easier, improve students’ vocabulary mastery and be able to describe the
name of animals. Teacher 2 used a social/affective strategy to encourage students
to be more active in the classroom.
