Abstract
This research is about the implementation of Problem Based Learning Model in Teaching Writing Descriptive Text. The purpose of the study was to investigate the implementation of problem based learning model in teaching writing descriptive text. The research data was taken from teacher activities in the teaching and learning process for students in grade VII th at SMPN 1 Lae Parira. The research design of
this research is a qualitative descriptive research. Data were analyzed using Arends & Kilcher, (2010) theory of problem based learning phases. Instruments of data
collection were video recorders and observation sheets in teaching writing descriptive text in grade Vllth at SMPN 1 Lae Parira using the problem based learning model. The reason for implementing the problem-based learning model in
teaching descriptive text writing based on the interview with the teachers is because the problem-based learning model in teaching descriptive text writing is feasible as
it can encourage students to analyze situations, identify problems, and find solutions. In addition, the problem-based learning model can also improve problemsolving
skills such as applying theoretical knowledge to writing tasks. The teacher used five phases in the problem based learning model , namely: orienting students to the problems, organizing students to study, assisting independent and group investigations, developing and presenting artifacts and exhibitions, analyzing and evaluating the problem- solving process. However, there are two of the learning
activities that the teachers did not provided students with a strong rationale for the teams’ organization in the second phase (organize students for study phase). And
then the teacher did not encouraged students to make reports in the form of video tapes, video tapes or other things in the fourth phase (develop and present artifacts
and exhibits phase).
