Abstract
This study aimed to identify the patterns of classroom interaction in English learning among year eight students and to analyze the teacher's reasons for applying
these patterns. This research was conducted at SMP Negeri 27 Medan using a qualitative descriptive method based on Creswell (2018). The subjects of this study were one English teacher and 30 year eight students at SMP Negeri 27 Medan. The results of this study identified four main patterns of classroom interaction: teacherstudents, teacher-student/a group of students, student-student, and studentsstudents.
The teacher applied the teacher-student interaction pattern by delivering material to all students simultaneously so that they received the same information at the same time. In addition, the teacher applied the teacher-student/a group of
students pattern by giving special attention to individual students or a group of students to check their understanding. Moreover, in the student-student pattern, the
teacher organized paired activities to practice students' speaking skills. Finally, in the students-students pattern, the teacher organized group activities to develop
students' collaboration skills.
