Abstract
The purpose of this research is to find out the difficulties in writing narrative texts
and to find out the factors that cause difficulties in writing narrative texts. This
research is a case study using qualitative methods. The population in this study
were students of class X SMA Private Nurul Hasanah in the academic year
2021/2022. The sample of this research is class X which consists of 30 students.
In data collection, there are two instruments used in this study, namely Test and
Interview. The test results showed that on average students had difficulties in
writing narrative texts such as difficulty in exploring ideas to compose stories in
narrative texts, students could not translate some Indonesian words into English
and some students made mistakes in using punctuation marks and using capital
letters. Based on the results of interviews, students have difficulty in
understanding narrative texts caused by two factors; internal and external factors.
Internal factors are boredom, laziness and limited time of students to write
English texts in class, lack of motivation and vocabulary mastery in writing
narrative texts, interest in reading narrative texts, difficulty in finding information
and difficulties in understanding texts. While external factors are the way of
teaching techniques, the limitations of personal dictionaries, and the learning
environment.
