Abstract

This study aimed to describe the analysis of the types of sentences in the science journal
and the social journal. The researcher used descriptive qualitative design. The data in
this research were 5 natural sciences and 5 social sciences journal articlesall of which
were sourced fromboth of natural science and social science journals. The techniqueof
collecting data in this study was document analysis. The researcher analyzed every
sentence contained in the natural science and social science journal articles. There were
753 sentences in natural science journal articles, all
sentences contained in 283 (37.58%) simple sentences, 157(20.84%) compound sentenc
es, 246 (32.66%,) complex sentences, 68 (8.89% ) compound complex sentences.
In the social science journal there were 796 sentences consisting of 224 (28.14%) simpl
e sentences,167 (20.9%) compound sentences,368 (46.23%) complex sentences,37(4.64
%.) compound complex sentences. The finding of this research shows that the types of
sentence which are mostly used in science journal are simple sentence obtained 37,58%
of the whole number of sentence types, complex sentences with the percentage of
32,66%. This is followed by inversely proportional to social journal in which is
complex sentence type is obtained 46,23%, followed by simple sentence with the
percentage of 28,14%.From the study finding, it can be concluded that the sentence
types which are mostly used in both science and social journal are simple and complex
sentence. Meanwhile the sentence types that are rarely used are compound and
compound complex sentence. It means the theory that states that thought can influence
writing is correct. However, all this should be re-examined with more accurate research
and more samples.
