The Use of Digital Media for Teaching English in Online Class at SMA Negeri 2 Tarutung

This study is about the Use of Digital Media for Teaching English in Online Classes at SMA
Negeri 2 Tarutung. The first aim of this research was to know what types of digital media are
used by teachers in teaching English in online classes. The second aim was to analyze the
process by which the teachers use the digital media in teaching English in online classes. The
data for this study was taken from the teachers who taught in the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth
grades in SMA Negeri 2 Tarutung. The research design of this study was descriptive
qualitative research. The data was analyzed using Laurillard's (2013) theory of digital media
in education. The instruments of data collection were observation and interview. The teachers
used various types of digital media in teaching English in online classes. They were: narrative
media, communicative, interactive, and productive media. In some cases, teachers also
combined two or more types of digital media. The process of the teacher in using the digital
media in teaching English in online classes had some similarities with the offline learning
process. The steps were: opening the class; greeting; brainstorming; then into giving material
through digital media; making discussion about the material; giving assignment to do in that
time; making conclusion together with students; giving students’ homework; and closing the
class.
