Abstract

This study aims to analyze the Use of Facial Expressions in Classroom Interaction.
A descriptive qualitative design was used in this study. The data were collected for
one meetings/45 minutes with one female teacher at X grade students in SMA
Swasta Sinar Husni Medan. The data was analyzed by using six categories of
Ekman’s Theory. For teacher in the happiness (71.42%), anger (14.29%) and
surprise (14.29%). For students that applied happiness in the opening (86.3%),
observing (100%), questioning (54.6%), collecting (68.1%), associating (81.9%),
communicating (72.8%) and closing (68.1%). Meanwhile, for fear expressions the
researcher found it in questioning (45.4%), collecting (31.9%), associating (18.1%),
communicating (18.1%) and closing (31.9%). Surprise expression in
communicating (9.1%). The highest category of facial expressions was happiness.
The realization for the happy expression occur when the teacher explained the
material and the students did funny things. Fear expression occur when the teacher
asked them about the material and the students felt unconfident. Surprise expression
occur when the teacher gave them appreciation of their assignment.
