Abstract

Prediction strategy is a learning method that can improve students' understanding
of recount texts in English. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of
prediction strategies in improving reading comprehension of grade VIII students
at SMP Negeri 4 Satap Pancur Batu. The method used is qualitative research with
data collection techniques through observation, interviews, and document
analysis. The results of the study showed that students had difficulty understanding
the structure of the recount text, identifying the main ideas, and connecting the
information in the reading. The main factors that cause this difficulty are limited
vocabulary, low student engagement, and lack of effective reading strategies. The
application of prediction strategies has been proven to help students estimate the
content of the text before reading, so that they can relate the information already
known to the content of the new reading. However, obstacles in the
implementation of this strategy include limited learning time in the classroom,
lack of training for teachers, and lack of supportive learning media. Therefore, a
more systematic approach is needed, including teacher training and the use of
interactive media to improve the effectiveness of prediction strategies. This
research has implications for the development of reading learning methods in
secondary schools. The integration of prediction strategies is expected to
significantly improve students' reading comprehension. Further research is
suggested to test this strategy in a broader context with a quantitative approach.
