THE USE OF GOOGLE TRANSLATE IN WRITING BY GRADE SEVENTH STUDENTS AT SMPN 16 MEDAN

This study aims to identify how students use Google Translate in writing, especially
in descriptive texts based on Bayu & faqih (2020). This study also identifies the
reasons why students use Google Translate in writing descriptive texts based on
Tsai (2022). This study was conducted at SMP Negeri 16 Medan in grade seven.
Descriptive qualitative research was used as a method in this research. The subjects
in this study are 25 grade VII students. The instruments in this research were video
recordings during classroom observations and audio recordings of interviews with
the students The results of this study show that the way students use Google
translate is to Enter all text into Google translate (100%), Read the whole
equivalent of words (32%), find the right equivalent according to the structure of
the target language (56%), The result of this study also show The reasons why
students use Google Translate are: It can help EFL Students enhance their English
writing performance (5 Students), Making a few spelling errors (10 Students),
Making a few grammatical errors (6 students) and Get advanced vocabulary (5
Students). That means Google Translate is useful for students in learning to write.
