Abstract

The goal of this study was to look at the higher order thinking skills (HOTS) level
of reading tasks and how it was realized in an English textbook using revised
Bloom’s taxonomy version. The data were obtained from the English textbook
“Bahasa Inggris: Life Today”, designed for twelfth-grade students in senior high
school (SMA/MA/SMK/MK), which was released in 2022, along with the new
curriculum, Merdeka Curriculum, by Ministry of Education and Culture. This
research used descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected by using
checklist and analyzed use analysis card based on revised bloom’s taxonomy. The
study’s finding revealed that the textbook covers all cognitive levels, they were
remember, understand, apply, analyze, evaluate and create. Out of 96 questions,
62 covered lower order thinking skills, with the highest number at the understand
level with 45 questions. Higher order thinking skills were covered with 34
questions, with the highest number at the analyze level with 24 questions. the
result of this study also showed that HOTS had not been realized properly. Highlevel
questions realized in this textbook was only 34 questions with 24 questions
at the analyze level, 8 at the evaluate level, and 2 at the create level. Analyze and
evaluate level can be found in all chapters, while the create level only appears in 2
chapters.
