Abstract

This study about The Use of Politeness Strategy by Teachers in Teaching
Narrative Text to Students of Grade XI at SMA Negeri 2 Medan. The first aim of
this research is to investigate politeness strategy types used by the English
teachers in teaching Narrative Text to students. The second aim is to reveal the
reasons why English teachers do use politeness strategy. The data for this study is
taken from two female teachers‟ utterances during the English teaching learning
process in teaching narrative text. The research design of this data was qualitative
research design. The data were collected by observation, audio or video recording
and interview. This study found that the teachers used all of the strategy types that
classified by Brown and Levinson (1987) which are named Bald on record,
Positive Politeness, Negative Politeness, and Off record. The use of politeness
strategy is dominated by teacher A. The teachers used politeness strategy types
related to context or situations and the specific needs of the classroom, the
teachers can effectively communicate while minimizing threats to the students‟
face.
