Abstract
This study aims to describe the roles performed by teachers when teaching descriptive
texts in grade VII of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Medan and the reasons for teachers using
these roles. Data were taken from two English teachers through observation and
interviews. Data analysis in this study used the Miles and Huberman model with three
stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. This study
uses Harmer's theory where in this theory there are eight types of teacher roles. This
study found that there are three roles used by the first teacher when teaching is the
teacher as a controller, prompter, and organizer. While the role of the teacher four roles
used by the second teacher when teaching is the controller, prompter, resource, and
observer. While the role of the teacher that is not implemented by the first teacher is as
an Assessor, Organizer, Participant, Tutor and Observer. While the role of the second
teacher that is not implemented is as an Assessor, Organizer, Participant and Tutor.
And from the results of the analysis it can be seen that the reason the teacher used this
role was to adjust the needs of her students. During the learning process, the teacher
used the role as a controller to keep the classroom atmosphere conducive. The
teacher used the role as a prompter when students could not answer questions, while the
teacher used the role as an observer to measure students' abilities by asking
questions. While the teacher used the role as a resource person to deliver material to
students. The roles used during learning are as a resource person, controller, and
prompter. While at the end of learning, the role used is the teacher as an observer.
