Abstract

This study aims to explain the types of code-switching used by English teacher at
SMP Swasta An Nizam Medan and to investigate the reasons why teacher use codeswitching.
This research focuses on the code-switching used by the English teacher.
The study used a qualitative-descriptive methods. The data in this study are
conversations taken from interactions between teachers and students in English
classroom and the results of teacher interviews. The findings show there are three
types of code switching: Intra-sentential code switching, Inter-sentential code
switching, and Tag switching. In the percentage of the three types code switching
used by teacher in English classes, the percentage of the first type of Intra-sentential
code-switching was 61 (53.98%), the second type of Inter-sentential code-switching
was 42 (37,17%), and the last Tag code-switching was 10 (8.85%). Researcher
found that the reasons teacher do code-switching in English classroom is to improve
comprehension, vocabulary development, and confidence, while keeping students
engaged with familiar terms
