Abstract

This research aimed to find out 1) The type of turn taking occurred of male and
female in group discussion and 2) The rules in the conversation during in group
discussion. The research was done by using descriptive qualitative design. The
data sources of the research were male and female student grade eleventh of
SMAS Ar-Rahman Medan, there are four groups. The instrument for collecting
data were audio recording. The data are analyzed by using Miles, Huberman and
Saldana theory, which are consisted of four activities such as data collection, data
condensation, data display, and conclusion drawings/verification. The result of
this research showed that 1) The type of turn taking involved taking the turn
starting up, taking over, interrupting, yielding the turn involved prompting,
appealing , giving up and holding the turn consict filled and verbal pause, silent
pause, lexical repetition, new start. In the taking over is highest female than male
and the lowest is starting up and new start. 2) The rules of the turn taking during
in group discussion, five rules such pauses, backchanneling, overlap, interruption
