THE USE OF GESTURES IN JUMANJI MOVIE: “WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE”

Gesture is way to express feelings and thoughts non-verbally. Gesture plays a
critical role in communication and human interaction. They are non-verbal cues
that conveys meaning, emotion, and intent. This study focuses in analyzing hand
gestures that characters used. The purpose of the study is to analyze the characters
gestures and the realization based on the context in the movie and culture, and
how the gestures occurred in the movie. The description consists of (1) what kind
of gestures used in Jumanji Movie “Welcome to The Jungle”; (2) how are the
realization of gestures based on context in the movie; (3) why are the metaphors
used dominantly in the movie. This study used descriptive qualitative method
which is conducted to describe and analyze the gestures used in the movie. The
main theory is the kind of gestures by McNeil (2005). The data analysis requires
the process of reducing data, displaying data and consulting. The result shows that
this study has found all four types of gestures which are used by the main
characters in the movie. They are deictic, metaphor, iconic, and beat type. Each
gesture has their own meaning in context of the movie and cultural context, for
example deictic type, using the index finger to point in a different direction can be
interpreted as a gesture to indicate and emphasize that the other person should
look in the indicated direction.
