Abstract

This study examined the use of metadiscourse markers in “Michelle Yeoh
Addresses the Harvard Law School Class of 2023,” which was available on
YouTube. This qualitative study used Hyland's (2005) theoretical framework of
metadiscourse markers to analyze the speech, focusing on interactive sources and
interactional resources. The research aimed to determine the most frequently used
metadiscourse markers and evaluate their role in the effectiveness of the speech.
The analysis involved different types of metadiscourse markers, such as transition
markers, frame markers, endophoric markers, evidentials, hedges, boosters,
attitude markers, engagement markers, and self-mentions. This study emphasized
the importance of metadiscourse markers in spoken texts, especially in speech,
and their role in enhancing communication and persuasiveness. The results were
expected to provide insights into how metadiscourse markers contributed to
speech effectiveness and offer practical implications for public speakers.
