SARCASM IN RED NOTICE MOVIE: THE TYPES AND RESPONSES

This study focused on the sarcasm used by the main character and the other’s character responses in the movie Red Notice. The objectives were to find out the types of sarcasm used by the main character, the ways main character realize his sarcasm, and to find out the types of response to the sarcasm used by the other characters. This study employed multimodal discourse analysis, with the data source is the Red Notice (2021) movie and transcript. Camp (2011) theory about four types of sarcasm, and Eisterhold, Attardo and Boxer (2006) theory about eight types of response to sarcasm used to examine the data in this study. The results of this study shows that 1) There were four kinds of sarcasm used by the main character, namely propositional sarcasm, lexical sarcasm, like-prefixed sarcasm and illocutionary sarcasm. 2) There were two ways of the main character realize his sarcasm, namely verbal and nonverbal. 3) There were six kinds of sarcasm used by the other character, namely laughter response, literal response, zero response, smile response, sarcasm response and nonverbal response.
