Abstract

Deaf people had different ways of how to communicating with other human,included the way they learned. Teachers needed to had special ways to teach them with a simple explanation to know the teaching and learning goals. The objectives of this research is how the strategy used by special school teachers when carrying out the teaching and learning process and the obstacles encountered in teaching deaf students at SD Melati special needs schools. To answer the issues, this study interviewed an English teacher about her strategies in
teaching and found the challenges during class roompracticed. To obtained data analytics, this study also did classroom observations. The teacher tended to focus the teaching on vocabulary like simple words instead of other skills, to teach simple conversation. To give appropriate treatment based on student’sability, to let students had freedom in developing their ability in English. To use
different media, and spoke slowly and clearly when used sign language. The teacher’s obstacles in teaching deaf students were from students’ abilities such as short memory, unstable emotions, and can’t hear clearly. These students’ weaknesses may encourage teachers to find ways how to make students
understand the materials. The finding of this study highlights that teaching deaf students needed extra effort and passion to make them got into the learning, and the strategies found in this study can be used by other teachers to teach deaf students.
