Abstract

The purposes of this study was to investigate the strategies used by the teacher and
explored the process of English teachers grade VII at SMP Negeri 5
Padangsidimpuan use the strategies in teaching reading comprehension of
descriptive text. This research has conducted by descriptive qualitative method. The
participants of this research were English teachers of grade VII at SMP N 5
Padangsidimpuan. The researcher also asked the teacher what strategies the teacher
usually used in teaching reading comprehension, especially in descriptive text. The
first teacher replied that she used Question and Answer Relationship (QARs)
strategy for teaching reading comprehension. While the second teacher used four
strategies in teaching reading comprehension. The four strategies are: Scaffolding,
Reciprocal Teaching, Summarizing and Question Answer Relationship (QARs).
Based on the results of observations that had been made by researcher, the aim of
this study is to enlarge and enrich the insights of theories related to the teachers
strategies in teaching reading comprehension of descriptive text. The data that
collected in this research is the result from observation and interview with the
teachers. The technique of collecting data in this research is descriptive qualitative
with observation, video recording and interview with the teacher. The results from
this study that collected are for the first teacher, she only used 1 strategy for teaching
reading comprehension namely: Question and Answer Relationship. While the
second teacher is used 4 strategies for teaching reading comprehension, namely:
Scaffolding, Reciprocal Teaching, Summarizing, and Question and Answer
Relationship. The two teachers carried out learning activities using teaching
strategies properly and there were no obstacles
