Abstract

The objective of this study is to develop interactive video in teaching procedure
text at SMP Negeri 11 Tanjungbalai. This study focuses on increasing students’
reading skill with the text is limited to procedure text based on Tanjungbalai local
wisdom. This study is conducted by adapting Borg and Gall's (2003) Research
and Development (R&D) method, involving six stages. The sample consists of 28
students from the first-semester ninth-grade class (9-1) 2023/2024 at SMP Negeri
11 Tanjungbalai. The researcher employs both questionnaire and interview as data
collection method. The data for this study is gathered using both qualitative and
quantitative methods. Qualitative data is obtained from student questionnaire and
interview with the teacher, while quantitative data obtained from the questionnaire
is presented in numerical form and percentages. The need analysis is divided by
three sections, such as: students' condition, needs, and wants. In need analysis,
students responded to 23 statements in questionnaire using Likert scale. The need
analysis identified students' challenges in understanding procedure text and their
preference for technology-based, interactive, visually appealing, and locally
integrated learning media. The product was validated by two experts, English
lecturer from Medan State University and English teacher from SMP Negeri 11
Tanjungbalai. The product outcome was interactive video created from Doratoon
and Adventr that based on Tanjungbalai local wisdom. The research findings
showed that interactive video was considered suitable as learning media in
teaching procedure text. The validation score from experts was 93,3% indicating
it as "excellent".
