Abstract
Gender is the socially constructed roles and activities that are considered suitable
for men and women. Because of the gender construction, gender inequality
existed especially towards women. Literature especially short story take a part to
be a medium to influence the gender inequality issue toward and women struggle
to fight it. The objectives of this study were to analyze 1) to analyze the types
gender inequality against women in selected short stories, 2) to elucidate the
women’s struggle to fight the gender inequality seen from feminist study, 3) to
give reasons why the author conveys gender inequality and women’s struggle.
This study used descriptive qualitative method. 1) There are five types of gender
inequality were analyzed using Mansour Fakih’s theory (2008) were describing in
selected short stories Sambal dan Ranjang. They were 1 (2,18%) of marginalized
of women, 19 (41,30%) of subordination of women, the 10 (21,74%) of
stereotypes of women, 14 (30,44%) of violence of women, and 2 (4,34%) of
workload of women. 2) The feminism types that reflected in women’s struggle
were analyzed using Rosemarie Tong’s theory (2013). There were 19 (86,36%) of
liberal feminism, the 3 (13,64) of radical feminism found in the selected of short
stories. 3) There were five reasons why the author of this collection of short
stories convey gender inequality issues and women’s struggle using Wellek &
Warren (1990). They are inspired by personal realities, wants to voice women
issues especially gender inequality, wants to break the gender inequality issues
toward women, inspired by another female author, and wants to criticize the
gender inequality issues toward women. It could be concluded that this selected
short stories contained types of gender inequality towards women, the women’s
struggle seen from feminism types, and the reason the author of this collection of
short stories convey gender inequality issues and women’s struggle.
