Abstract
Critical Discourse Analysis is a method for analyzing social power abuses,
domination, and inequalities reproduced by texts and speech in social and political
contexts. As power corruption and dominance in Macbeth is one of the social
issues, the researcher condensed the investigation using Van Dijk's theory (1988)
with the aim of examining the social circumstances that lead to Macbeth's
ambition, traitorousness, and ruthlessness for power, with limitations imposed by
the text's structure and the social cognition that underlies it. The researcher
employed a qualitative descriptive method with the source of data from the script
of Macbeth movie. After analyzing the dimensions of text and social cognition
using Van Dijk's CDA model, the results showed that in the text element of
macrostructure, the researcher found that there are 3 main themes in the movie,
i.e. greed, ambition and betrayal. In the element of superstructure, there is an
opening, content and conclusion to the script of Macbeth Movie. And in the third
element, the microstructure, it is presented through an analysis of settings,
stylistics and symbols in the movie of Macbeth. In the analysis of the dimension
of social cognition, as to how Macbeth's social cognition is influenced by other
characters, the researcher discovered that Lady Macbeth, the three witches, and
their use of manipulation and persuasion through their words generated the most
significant shifts in Macbeth's attitude and way of thinking.
