Abstract
This study displays Halliday's theory in Systemic Functional Linguistics in
investigating the register in serial arguments found in the film Marriage Story.
Register is a grammatical function used in a particular context. The text according
to the selected context in the serial arguments is dissected into sentences and
clauses and then analyzed in terms of field, tenor, and mode according to the
components that make up each part. The main objective of the study is to
investigate the register utilized in the serial arguments, then finding out how the
register contributes to the character's emotions and relationships in the serial
arguments, and comprehend the director's reasons for using this specific register
in the serial arguments. The study uses discourse analysis method in the research
process. The study comes to the conclusion that the home life of Nicole and
Charlie, which has been shattered and is on the verge of divorce due to multiple
problems, is the field of the register category of the entire serial arguements.
These problems can be seen from the processes, participants, and situations that
make up the dialog. The mood and modality indicate that the tenor is concerned
about Charlie and Nicole's attempts to assert their viewpoints on one another. In
the end, the film's serial argument style falls under the spoken method, which is
distinguished by the predominance of unmarked theme. Additionally, Noah
Baumbach as the director and the scriptwriter of the film chose certain registers in
the serial arguments due to the film's focus on the context of marriage and divorce
relationships.
