Abstract

This research deals with the ten grade students’ motivation on studying English.
This research uses a qualitative design in which the data are taken from the
sentence of texts. The data were collected by questionnaire and interview. The
result are as follows: (1) In terms of students’ motivation in learning English,
intrinsic factor gets a slightly higher percentage than the extrinsic factor with a
difference about 5%, more specifically 76.24% of the students are influenced by
intrinsic factor and 70.58% of them are dominantly controlled by extrinsic factor.
However, both factors are labelled in a high category; (2) Students’ learning
motivation stay stagnant despite the teachers’ vigorous efforts such as integrating
outdoor learning, showing motivational videos of a successful educated figures
who speaks English fluently, or down to praising an active learner at sometimes it
even fluctuated; (3) The most dominant students’ motivation come from their
intrinsic factor which is improving their English language skills. In conclusion,
the students’ motivation in learning English are affected by some factors such as
physical and psychology factors, future goals, family background, interest,
teachers’ approach and methodology in learning, or school’s facilities.
Accordingly, it is important to employ various learning strategies and identify the
students’ goal and interest. Finally, it is also hoped that this study is useful for
everyone who wants to conduct further study on a similar topic.
