AN ANALYSIS OF ERROR IN RECOUNT TEXT WRITTEN BY EIGHT GRADE STUDENTS AT SMP NEGERI 2 PERCUT SEI TUAN

The research aimed to find out the most common types of students error in
recount text and the main cause of students error in writing recount text by the
students of SMP Negeri 2 Percut Sei Tuan. The population of this research was
the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Percut Sei Tuan. This research was a
descriptive qualitative research. The number of samples was 20 students and data
was collected through a writing test. The researcher used writing test as an
instrument. The researcher found 153 error in the writing test of SMP Negeri 2
Percut Sei Tuan. This study found that there were four error types based on the
surface strategy taxonomy. The error were 37 items (24%) of omission error, 44
items (29%) for addition error, 60 items (39%) for misformation error, and 12
items (8%) of misordering error. And also found the main cause of students‟ error
in recount text written by the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Percut Sei
Tuan there were carelessness, first language interference, and translation. Based
on these findings, it can be concluded that the most common types of students
error in writing recount text by the students of SMP Negeri 2 Percut Sei Tuan was
an error in misformation error. The teacher should simplify the explanation
without less the substance of material given especially rules and text types of
writing.
