Abstract
The purpose of this study is to develop reading media through Scratch
Program for teaching narrative text at eighth grade students of SMPN 35
Medan. This research employed the research and development (R&D)
stages of the (Borg, Gall, and Gall, 2003) model, which was condensed
into six steps. This research was conducted using six procedures of R&D
procedures: (1) Gathering Information and Data, (2) Need Analysis, (3)
Media Development, (4) Validation to Experts, (5) Revising Media, and
(6) Final Product. The study's subjects were eighth grade students at
SMPN 35 Medan. Meanwhile, the study was conducted with 32 students
from class VIII-7. A questionnaire was used to obtain the information. The
purpose of using the questionnaire was to collect information from the
respondents. Two experts evaluated and assessed the reading media
created. An English lecturer from State University of Medan and an
English teacher from SMPN 35 Medan. According to the results of the
experts validation of reading media through Scratch Program for teaching
narrative text, the average score of the media validation was 95%. From
the validation, this media got excellent criteria. Based on the results of the
teacher response sheet (95%) and student response sheet (95%), the use of
reading media through Scratch Program in the learning process is very
practical. The media is feasible to be used by students of eighth grade
SMPN 35 Medan. This media can also help students in learning English,
especially in reading and understanding narrative text. It can be concluded
that the use of reading media in the classroom to teach narrative text has
many advantages for students, such as attracting their attention and
minimizing boredom in learning to read, especially in reading narrative
text
