The purposes of conducting this research were to find out the questioning
strategies used by the teachers during classroom interaction and to find out the
reason of teachers used their questioning strategies during classroom interaction at
SMPN 27 Medan in academic year 2022/2023. There were 2 teachers of English
as the subject of this research. In this case, the researcher collected the data using
observations of classroom interaction, and interview the teachers. The result
showed that there were some types of questioning strategies used by the teachers
during classroom interaction. Rephrasing (7.14%), Simplification (53.57%),
Repetition (28.57%), and Decomposition (10.71%). Teachers’ reason of using
questioning strategies were to; 1) Stimulate and maintain students’ interest, 2)

teacher to clarify what student has said, 4) Enable a teacher to elicit particular
structures or vocabulary items, (5) Enable teachers to check students'
