Abstract
This study deals with the Code Switching used by Teacher in English Teaching
Process. The objectives of this study were to reveal the types of code switching
commonly used by the Teacher and to describe why the teacher used Code
Switching while explaining the mater ial in the classroom. The research design in
this study was descriptive qualitative. The data were collected by observing
teacher’s language utterances of grade seventh and interview. The findings of this
research is the types of code-switching were found in three types: inter-sentential
code-switching, intra-sentential code-switching, and tagswitching. This study
showed that the Tag Code Switching appeared eighteen times, Inter-sentential
Code Switching appeared thirty-two times, and Inter-sentential Code Switching
appeared twenty-one times at SMP Negeri 1 Sibolga. Of all types, Inter-sentential
Code Switching is commonly used by the Teacher. So, the researcher can
conclude that the type of Code Switching commonly used by the Teacher in the
English Teaching Process to Seventh Grade Students is Inter-sentential Code
Switching. Several reasons affect the use of code switching used by teachers in
the class: rhetoric reasoning, status differences, formalities, and a lack of
vocabulary. Furthermore, from the reason the teacher makes the substitution of
code switching above, the reason students' lack of vocabulary in the class is the
factor that most influences teacher using switching codes because the students'
English ability is different and helps students share their ideas when
communicating. In addition, two languages were involved in the code-substitution
process in seventh-grade students at SMPN 1 Sibolga: English and Indonesian.
