Abstract

This research has two aims: (1) To describe the ways of English teachers at
SMP Negeri 37 to improve their students' speaking ability (2) To find out the
strategies used by teachers in teaching speaking ability. The research was
conducted by using descriptive qualitative analysis. It was completed at SMP
Negeri 37 Medan. The data were gathered by administrating interviews and
classroom observation. From the result of the research, it was found that the
first teacher used flashcards and the second teacher used role-play as the
strategy in teaching speaking ability to students at SMP Negeri 37 Medan. As
a result of the research, teachers' teaching of speaking ability using flashcards
and role play can improve students' speaking ability. Every English teacher
uses different ways to improve students' speaking ability because each teacher
teaches different classes, different class level students' abilities, and various
class conditions.
