Abstract

Based on Sinclair and Coulthard's Model, this study was focused on interactions
between teachers and students in English classrooms. The objectives of this study
were (a) to describe how the IRF model is used in the English classroom interaction,
and (b) to describe which one is the dominant order applied by the teachers and
students from the IRF structures.Qualitative design was used in this research. To
answer the problems of thestudy, the data were collected in three ways, they were
observation, documentation, and interview. The findings of this study were as
follows: 1)It was discovered that there were three structures of exchanges that were
realized with the structures between two teachers of two classes. The structures that
occurred were initiation, response, and feedback. There were 22 initiations, 31
responses, and 7 feedbacks from the overall utterances produced by the teacher and
students of class VIII A. The overall utterancesproduced by the teacher and students
of VIII C had 15 initiations, 30 responses, and 6 feedback. 2) It was found the
dominant order applied fromthree structures in both of the class is responses.
