Abstract
This research is concerned with the way the researcher explored the analysis of
semiotic interpretation in the process of Mangirdak in Batak Toba. The objectives of
the study were to investigate the sign and their meaning, to describe the interpretation
of meaning, and to explain the reason why the meaning interpreted in the process of
Mangirdak in Batak Toba. The research method used in this research was descriptive
qualitative. The data got from video of Mangirdak process in Pematangsiantar, and
also interviewed Raja Parhata/Paradat (The expert of Batak Toba culture). The data
were analyzed by using Peirce’s triadic of semiotic theory. The result showed that
there were 13 objects of sign founded in the process of Mangirdak in Batak Toba,
consisted of: 1 object of sign was icon. It was Ulos. Then 12 object of sign were
symbols. They were Dengke, Tolor, Manuk Napinadar, Itak Gurgur, Accimun,
Pisang, Pangir, Aek Sitio-tio, Janur, Boras si pir ni tondi, Pagori and Pasituak
Natonggi. The signs that were used on the process of Mangirdak in Batak Toba have
different meaning. These differences have given different interpretation.
