Abstract

The aim of this study was to show the gender representation and gender bias examples in the English textbook used for tenth-grade Senior High School Students. The method of this study was qualitative. The subject of this study was a series of textbook of K13 curriculum entitle “English in Use”. This study used content analysis technique. Totally, there were 117 pictures and 91 texts that consist of gender to be analyzed through four categories of gender representation which are proposed by Abdelhay and Benhaddouche in 2015 and through five categories of gender bias which proposed by Amini and Birjandi in 2012. The research finding showed that the gender representation in the English in Use textbook did not show the equal result both in pictures and texts. The result showed that male character was presented dominantly in number of appearances with percentage 59% while female was portrayed in only 41% and the male also had greater roles in doing public roles and sport activities while female was still presented as the one who did more reproductive activities than male. The gender bias was still found in the textbook. The gender bias examples were the male was portrayed as the superior in public roles and sports while female was portrayed as the one who had responsibility to do more family activities such as taking care of children and husband, cleaning, cooking and doing grocery shopping.
