Abstract
This study was a descriptive-qualitative approach that analyzed the pattern of
interaction based on Sinclair and Coulthard Model in SMK Broadcasting Bina
Creative Medan. Data of this study was the utterances of 32 students and 1
English teacher when conducting online learning. Data were collected by
observing, recording the audio and video of online interaction, and taking field
note. The data were analyzed into three level of basic rank scale from Sinclair &
Coulthard model, exchange, move, and act. Afterwards, the results were
transcripted into IRF pattern. After analysing the data, it was found that there
were five patterns produced from the online interaction, they are I pattern, IRF
pattern, IR pattern, IbRF pattern, and IF pattern. As a results, there were 176
exchanges generated from the transcription. Specifically, I pattern had 31.81%
with 56 exchanges, IR pattern had 23.29% with 41 exchanges, IRF pattern had
29.54 % with 52 exchanges, IF pattern had 6.25% with 11 exchanges, and IbRF
pattern had 7.95% with 14 exchanges. I pattern was frequently used in classroom
discourse. According to the high percentage of I pattern, it implied that lack of
responses were delivered by students during the teaching-learning process.
