Abstract
This research deals with gratitude expressions and responses which used by the characters in The Vow movie. The objectives of this study were: (1) to describe the gratitude expressions and responses used by the characters in The Vow movie, (2) to elaborate how are the gratitude expressions and responses used by the characters in The Vow movie, (3) to explain the reason of utilizing gratitude expressions and responses in The Vow movie. The research design of this study was descriptive qualitative research. There were 70 utterances which contained of gratitude expressions and responses in The Vow movie. There were five types of gratitude expressions found in this movie, specifically (12.85%) for acknowledging a major favor, (12.85%) for dismissing a person’s service, (21.42%) for closing the conversation, (17.14%) for making the hearer feel good, (4.28%) for negative request, and the new finding is there were (2.85%) for an offer to someone. Meanwhile, there were two types of gratitude responses found in this movie, specifically, (11.42%) for minimizing the favor, (14.28%) for pleasure responses, and the new finding is there were (2.85%) for appreciation responses of the act. Furthermore, gratitude expressions and responses realized by used catharsis, reciprocity and for the usual thing. Then gratitude expressions and responses used in this movie is appropriate to two situation, specifically, the acknowledgment of goodness comes in one’s life and kindness that lies from outside.
