The Flouting Maxim Expressed by The Characters in Zakeut Edition of Eumpang Breuh Movie

This study deals with the flouting maxim by the characters in Zakeut Edition of Eumpang Breuh movie. The objective of this study were to find out the types of flouting maxim used by the characters in the movie, to elaborate the way of flouting maxim used by the characters in the movie, and to explain the reasons of flouting maxim by the characters in Zakeut Edition of Eumpang Breuh movie. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research design. The data were utterances from the characters in the movie and source of data taken from Zakeut Edition of Eumpang Breuh movie. The result of the data showed that there were four types of flouting maxim expressed by the characters in the movie as flouting maxim quality (33%), flouting maxim quantity (35%), flouting maxim relevance (14%) and flouting maxim of manner (18%). The most dominant type of flouting maxim occurred was flouting maxim of quantity. It also influenced by their culture background which Acehnese’s character often to long-winded while doing discussion. In this movie shown that the characters who are Acehnese tend to give wordy answer in conversation. And the lowest flouting maxim was flouting maxim of Relevance. However the flouting maxim realized through hyperbole, metaphor, irony, to the point, avoidance, overstatement, understatement, irrelevant statement and ambiguous statement. Meanwhile the reasons for flouting maxim are to hide something, to explain more about something, to expect something, to change the conversation topic, to avoid talking about something, to get attention, save face, defend himself/herself, express annoyed, convincing the hearer, being friendly and misunderstanding.
