Abstract
This study dealt with gender turn-taking strategies in political talk show programs in Kompas TV. This research used a qualitative research design with a single case study to gain an understanding on this study. It was conducted descriptively. This study aimed to(1) examine the types of gender turn-taking strategies in political talk show programs in Kompas TV (2) described how the ways of gender turn-taking strategies in political talk show programs in Kompas TV and (3) explained the reasons for gender turn-taking strategies in political talk show programs in Kompas TV. The use of instruments in this study was observation and video talk show. The observation was used to find out the phenomenon of the types of gender turn-taking strategies in political talk show programs in Kompas TV in order to describe the ways of gender turn-taking strategies in political talk show programs in Kompas TV and to gain the reasons of gender turn-taking strategies in political talk show programs in Kompas TV. There were three types of turn-taking strategies namely taking the turns consisted of starting up, taking over, interrupting and overlapping, holding the turns consisted of filled the pauses, silent pauses, lexical repetition, and new start, yielding the turn consisted of prompting, appealing and giving up. Then, there were two ways of turn-taking strategies namely, shift of gaze away from the current speaker and use gesticulation. The last, there were three reasons of turn-taking strategies namely, asking for clarification, completion and showing rejection. Male and female host dominantly used interrupting strategies to taking the turn, male guests dominantly used silent pause to hold the turn or deliver their opinion about the topic, while female guest dominantly used interrupting strategy in taking the turn.
