Abstract
This study aimed to investigate thematic progression pattern in writing skill in English learning process. Thematic Progression part of Theme and Rheme in which theme is starting point for the message that informs what clause is going to be about and rheme is remainder of the theme. The research was conducted at SMP Maria Goretti Kabanjahe. The research was descriptive qualitative research.
The data were obtained from the students at ninth grade class is the clauses of their writing recount text. The source of the data was taken from students’ writing
recount text grade ninth. There were five steps that implemented by research, Separating the text into clauses, Analyzing the clauses in to Theme and Rheme,
Figuring the pattern of thematic progression of students’ writing, Classifying the thematic progression pattern, Drawing conclusion. The finding showed that There were 246 clauses from 35 text written by students. There were patterns of thematic progression used by the students in recount text. There were Constant Theme Pattern, Derived Hypermatic Progression Pattern, Simple Linear Pattern,
Derived Thematic Pattern and many of students’ writing have no pattern. It can be concluded that thematic progression is able to help students to organize or arrange their sentence in paragraph well.
