Abstract
Figures of speech can be found in many occasions such as wedding party, death rituals, traditional ceremonies both in spoken and written forms. The objectives of this thesis were 1. to describe what Figures of speech are used in pedah-pedah Karonese wedding ceremony. 2. to explain how the Figures of speech are realized in pedah-pedah Karonese wedding ceremony. 3. to state the reasons of Figures of
speech realized in pedah-pedah Karonese wedding ceremony. This research was conducted by using qualitative descriptive design. The data were the sentences
congregated from pedah - pedah that were delivered by sembuyak, kalimbubu, and anak beru at Jambur Taras, Bahorok. The data were analyzed by using theory of
Keraffs. The findings are (1) There were 7 types of figures of speech were found in pedah-pedah Karonese wedding ceremony at Jambur Taras Bahorok which were simile, hyperbole, personification, metaphor, allegory, symbol, and irony. The most dominant kinds of figure of speech is simile (22 items or 21%). Simile is used in pedah-pedah to describe the situation or the setting in the wedding ceremony, to describe what bridge or groom look like, and to describe the couple‘s feelings. The three speakers always express figures of speech with words
or phrases related to family, achievement, properties, body, action, poultry, life, plant, nature, man, characters, marriage, belongings, clothes, food, and kindness. (2) Figures of Speech reflected Karonese cultural values such as kiniteken, kehamaten, megenggeng, and metenget. (3)The reasons of figure of speech are
realized in pedah-pedah Karonese wedding ceremony to maintain the Karonese cultures, beautify the languages and as a praying and blessing to the bride and groom.
