Abstract

The objectives of this study were: (1) find out the suitable reading material and (2) develop English reading materials which meet to the students’ needs of the Tenth Grade of Fashion Design students at SMK BINTANG TIMUR
Pematangsiantar. This study adapted the R&D model proposed by Gall, Gall and Borg (2003) and Lee and Owens (2004). The procedure of this study combined and simplified through three stages; (1) evaluation and need analysis; (2) materials design (3) materials validation. The instruments used in this study were documentary sheet, questionnaire, and interview. The data from evaluation and need analysis were analyzed by using descriptive analysis. The subject of this study was tenth grade students of Fashion Design program at SMK BINTANG
TIMUR Pematangsiantar. The data were gathered by distributing questionnaire to 28 students and administrating interview to the English teacher. The questionnaire and interview result proved that the students of Fashion Design program need English reading materials, particularly with their major. The result of this study was reading materials especially on descriptive text. The product has been validated by experts. Based on the experts’ judgment result, the score was 89,28 which belonged to excellent category based on Dirgeyasa (2011), since the range is 81-100. It means that the development materials relevant or appropriate for the tenth grade students of fashion design program.
