Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the kinds of Indonesian cultural contents in English textbooks and how kinds of Indonesian culture are represented in English textbooks. This study was descriptive qualitative design. The data of this study is two English English textbooks in SMPN 1 Dolok Masihul. The textbooks are Buku Bahasa Inggris “When English Rings a Bell Curriculum 2013 Revised 2017 and “Mandiri (Mengasah Kemampuan Diri) Practise your English Competence. This study adopted by William’s theory to find the Indonesian cultural contents in English textbooks by written texts and illustration or pictures. To analyze the data, the framework from Adaskou, Britten and Fahsi is used. The data were collected by using an observation and docummentation of the two English textbooks that using as process of teaching-learning. Moreover, from the analysis, it shows that many parts of cultures represented in the textbooks. However, there are many parts of culture didn’t represented as the Indonesian cultural contents. The analysis showed that value as one component comprised ‘entertainment, liberal, consumerism, and inculcation of Indonesian values’. Norm as another component encompassed ‘girlfriend-boyfriend relationship, opposite sex contact or dating, pet-keeping, and club-dancing’. The next category, is institution involved
‘entertainment, commercial, sports, educational, and conventional institutions’. The ten sub-components of cultural artifact included ‘occupation, clothes, name, music, sport, art, celebrity, food, instrument, and education. The findings showed that the Indonesian cultural contents in the book 1 with the highest percentages 41% Artifacts value and unfortunately, the value of institutions aspect has the lowest percentages with only 6%. For book 2 showed that related to the Indonesian cultural contents with the highest percentages 66% Artifacts value and Unfortunately, the value of institutions aspect has the lowest percentages with only 8%.The findings of this study revealed that the two textbooks have not the whole of Indonesian cultural contents.
